As per the definition in Wikipedia - Digital marketing is the marketing of products or services using digital technologies, mainly on the Internet, but also including mobile phones, display advertising, and any other digital medium.

Digital Marketing is one of the fastest growing field and opening new window of opportunity for all type and size of business to market their product to their prospective customer. Digital Marketing allows the business organizations to reach to their prospective customer with low starting budget, target only to a particular segment of customer based on their demographic information, quick analysis and adjust their budget as per the ad responses, keep them connected using website, social media or regular updates via email, sms, feeds etc.

It has also add a new job verticals &  career opportunity in digital marketing for freshers and experienced IT professional with adequate domain knowledge.
Purpose of this blog article is to provide a short explanation of various terms being used in digital marketing. It will help the students, who are looking towards digital marketing as a career opportunity as well for decision makers of business organization who looking it as and business opportunity
Following are the terms most frequently being used in digital marketing

Advertiser : 
A person or company who advertises a product, service, or brand by paying their advertisement fee through ad agency.

Ad(vertisement) display network
It is the network of websites and web-portals where the ad agency displays the ad banner of their advertisers

Landing Page :
It is a dedicated web page page on advertiser's website, where the targeted visitors are redirected after they clicks on advertiser's ad banner. It is specially designed to provide most relevant information visitor and engage the visitor. Purpose of the Landing page is to maximize the conversion ratio, and achieve high success rate of their advertising.

PPC - Pay Per Click
It is one of the most popular way of advertising and promoting a product, services or brand on Internet. Advertisement banner contains text,image,videos,animation or its combinations are placed on the websites, where the targeted user segment often visits. On click of ad banner, visitors are redirected to advertisers landing page to show more details. For every-time visitors clicks on the ad banner, a certain amount is changed to advertiser.  This way advertisers buys a page visit for their landing page. Google Adwords, Facebook Ads are some of such platform for advertiser
 
CTR - Cost Per Thousand
It is a modal of Internet marketing in which advertiser is charged for 1,000 impression of their ad banner on the ad display network. This way visitor is not redirected to the advertisers landing page, but it increases the visibility of the product,service,brand. Normally CTR and PPC are the same ad banner but depending upon the visitors action, advertiser are charged for PPC, CTR or both.

Conversion ratio
Total number of visitor who have completed the transaction divided by the total number of visitors who have visited to the landing page. It show the efficiency of the digital marketing.
SEO - Search Engine Optimization
SEO is a technique to affecting visibility of website, web-page or web-portal in search engine through unpaid/Free search result to improve rankings, drive traffic, and increase awareness in the search engines. It is a process of optimizing the web contents so that search engines prefers to show them on top of the page of better search ranking. This way it maximizes the chances that the visitor will click the search result and reach to the website. Traffic received to a website using such technician is known as organic traffic, natural traffic or earned traffic. There are a number of factors that are considered by search engine during the indexing & ranking a page in search result.

Some of the key factors for good SEO and Search Engine ranking are - quality of contents, site speed, responsive or mobile friendliness, number of visits, regular contents updates, uplinks & downlinks etc.
SEM - Search Engine Marketing
As defined in wikipedia - Search engine marketing (SEM) is a form of Internet marketing that involves the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs) primarily through paid advertising.
SEM may incorporate SEO, SMM and PPC as a digital marketing strategy to have long term result

SMM - Social Media Marketing
Social Media Marketing (SMM) is a type of digital marketing in which Social Network Medial is used as a platform for marketing. Due to large number of very active user base connected on social network, this is one of the popular platform for digital marketing. Another main advantage of SMM is that - the advertisement are shown to very specific user group based on advertisers targeted user segment, by filtering them based on user's demographic information like age, gender, location, interest etc. Often you might have seen the sponsored post or banner on your facebook page, are the example of SMM


AdWords
As defined in wikipedia : Google AdWords is an online advertising service developed by Google, where advertisers pay to display brief advertising copy, product listings, and video content within the Google ad network to web users. Google AdWords' system is based partly on cookies and partly on keywords determined by advertisers.

AdSense
As defined in wikipedia : Google AdSense is a program run by Google that allows publishers in the Google Network of content sites to serve automatic text, image, video, or interactive media advertisements, that are targeted to site content and audience. These advertisements are administered, sorted, and maintained by Google.
 
Landing Page
As defined in wikipedia : In digital marketing, a landing page, sometimes known as a "lead capture page" or a "lander", or a "destination page". It is a single web page that appears in response to clicking on a search engine optimized or search result or an online advertisement banner.
UpLinks
In digital marketing, uplinks are the click-able hyper links that connects your websites to another website or webpage. It is normally used to provide the references and acknowledge the contents used on users website from another website. It is also used to connect the user with relevant information that visitor may need as a useful links.
DownLinks
On digital marketing, down-links are the links that are used on another website to refer user website. It is also one of the criteria for page ranking by Search Engine. It shows the trustfulness of content on your website.
Web Traffic
It is the amount of data exchange on your website. Higher traffic may be the indication of more user visit. It is also one of the criteria for page ranking by Search Engine. It shows the usefulness of content on your website.

Organic Traffic :
Organic traffic are the amount of visitors comes to your website as a result of search result on search engine like google, yahoo, bing etc. It is opposite to paid search which drives visitors to your website using paid advertisement. Every digital marketing professions strives to maximize organic traffic.

UI/UX
UI is an elementary part of the web-page or application. Main focus of UI designer is to on implementation of business logic and functionalities, where as the focus of UX designer is on usability of application. UX designer need a deep understanding about the diversification of user based based on their demographic information and interaction pattern.
Bounce Rate
It is the percentage of visitors, who have returned from landing page without browsing further pages on the website. Some times it gives negative signal to the search engine that - the SEO keyword doesn't matches with the information available on target link, hence considered as an attempt to manipulate search engine.

Crawler
As defined in wikipedia : A Web crawler, sometimes called a spider, is an Internet bot that systematically browses the World Wide Web, typically for the purpose of Web indexing (web spidering). Web search engines and some other sites use Web crawling or spidering software to update their web content or indices of others sites' web content.
